Shipwreck S/S Agios Markos

Cargo steam ship “Agios Markos” (ex Homayun), with Ithaka ship register number 58, a volume of 4513 gross registered tonnage and 2732 net registered tonnage, 6850 tones transport capacity, a length of 376 feet, constructed in 1919 at William Gray and Co. shipyard of West Hartlepool, functioning with a three-cylinder reciprocating 517 NHP engine. Aristotelis V. Vlassopoulos owned 25% of the ship, Ioannis Markos Kavvadias 21%, Pandora G. Triliva 15%, Ioannis Ch. Trilivas 14% and the rest 25% of the ship was owned by other smaller shareholders. The ship was bought 29,000 British pounds in 1929. The ship loaded with 5389 tones of barley and other things of the Argentinian Red Cross, coming from Buenos Aires, had sailed in Piraeus on 21 April 1941 with Spyros Kallimanis as a captain. After sailing, the ship was performing routes off the port, waiting for an entrance command. During afternoon, German airplanes made a lot of air raids and as a result the ship sank at Kaki Vigla at Salamina. Due to the bombing, the 28-year-old sailor Thomas Ferentinos from Ithaka was killed.
